"Smoke" by Gracie

"Smoke" for Illustration Friday

Gracie's idea for the smoke theme: Chimney World! It's a land inhabited by creatures like dragons, chimney-bodied girls, and chimney-headed worms. Cool!

A family of ghosts. I especially like the one sporting the soul patch. (Ah! I made a funny: A soul patch...) And good use of overlapping in the picture, Gracie!

"Black & Orange" by Gracie

"Black & Orange" by Gracie, age 6

This is Gracie's entry for the Black & Orange contest. Penelope said it "knocked her socks off." And that's before she even knew Gracie was 6. I have a box full of thousands upon thousands of squares that I cut from magazines that the kids can use to make mosaics. As you can see, they've gotten really good at it.

"Black & Orange" by Isaac

"Black & Orange" by Isaac, age 8

The creator of Illustration Friday has a special challenge during October called Black & Orange. The only rule is that the image has to be created primarily with black and orange. Isaac and Gracie wanted to get in on the action. This is Isaac's entry.

"Smitten" by Gracie

I think Grace's picture is about as perfect as you could get in trying to portray 'smitten'. . .

A monster with no mouth. He's the only creature on his whole planet though, so he has no reason to talk anyway.

"Farm" by Lily

"Farm" for Illustration Friday
by Lily, Age 3

This is Lily's first Ill'Fri' entry, and I'm wowed - did I mention she's 3? This is a farmer, a girl, a duck, and an ear of corn. I'm especially impressed by the green "dialog balloons" (Lily will have to translate...) and the horizon lines behind the figures. Horizon Lines?! Did I mention she's 3?

"Safe" by Gracie

"Safe" for Illustration Friday
by Gracie, age 6

When presented with the word "safe," Gracie thought of animals that stay safe through camouflage. This chameleon is safely camouflaged, enabling it to catch a fly. Its camouflage also protects it from that hawk. Since the hawk can't find the chameleon, it's settling for those ants instead. I think the ants know this because if you look close, they are praying.

Elephant

I was really impressed with this picture of an elephant that Lily - age 3 - did from memory. She had seen a national geographic show with elephants a few days earlier. Did I mention she's 3? Amazing how she drew the tusks. (And the five legs...)

Isaac's idea for "safe." The guy in the tower looks pretty safe to me! Not so sure about the poor chap in the cage....

I especially like the official whistle-blower leaping and doing the splits in the background and the plane pulling the 'race day' sign.
